Union J – Carry You

23 Apr

It’s about time that a great pop act came along to rival One Direction (as amazing as they are) who currently monopolise the boy band market. The Wanted might give them a run for their money, but they’ve been conspicuously absent, busy conjuring up their long anticipated third studio album.  Reconnected attempted it, but the less said about that the better. Enter Union J, with the release of their debut single ‘Carry You’. It’s pretty good.

One Direction tracks can be a tad formulaic, but ‘Carry You’ somehow avoids that, the song feels heartfelt whilst being cheesy enough to still be ‘boyband’. Union J have successfully formed their own sound without treading on the toes of their rivals.

The production (courtesy of boyband super-producer Steve Mac) is uncomplicated but effective – chunky piano hits, distant ebbing synths and a pumping kick drum. The vocals on the chorus flip smoothly to falsetto for a catchy, yodelling hook. Hang in there until after the second chorus because the middle eight is what makes this song, it’s perfect (well done songwriter Claude Kelly, well done).

Favourite lyric: ‘When your vision gets blurry, you don’t have to worry, I’ll be your eyes’
