Mikky Ekko – Kids

21 Jun

Mikky Ekko has released his second single and it is a beauty!

Soulful pop meets indie rock in this anthemic record that combines throbbing organ synths with chugging guitars. The song opens with beautiful catchy melodies sung by Ekko’s distinctive emotive vocal, which rises into falsetto over playful handclaps in the bridge. Later on, a shift to the minor makes way for a darker, brooding middle 8, which then builds towards a final pull-out-all-the-stops chorus. The song was cowritten by Ekko, with Jason Perry and Dimitri Tikovoi (Charli XCX, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Nichola Roberts ‘Beat of My Drum’).

Production has been handled by Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, Maroon 5…the list is pretty much infinite) and John Hill (Pink, Rihanna). You can certainly hear Blanco’s trademark hit-making techniques shining through, from the pumping kick drum to the explosive chorus. Nice clean ending too. It’s always refreshing to hear a song that ends properly rather than just hitting the fader.

Mikky Ekko isn’t taking the solo project thing lightly, the Nashville-based artist has recruited the best names in the business for his forthcoming album. Watch this Mikky Ekko shaped space, kids.
