Chart Update – April 28th

28 Apr

Daft Punk

It’s taken them twenty-odd years, but Daft Punk have finally got a UK Number One with ‘Get Lucky’. With Pharrell’s smooth vocals, Nile Rodgers’ distinctive guitar and some good old vocoders, this organic track stands out a mile from the rest of the chart.

Divas in Distress

Carly Rae Jepsen and Amelia Lily both made weak entries into the chart this week: Lily’s ‘Party Over’ just about made the cut at #40 while Jepsen’s ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You’ was not that far ahead at #35. To cut Carly Rae Jepsen some slack, following up ‘Call Me Maybe’, the smash of last summer, was always going to be tough. It has been rumoured that Jepsen’s management have invited Nicky Minaj to contribute a verse to the track, rent-a-rapper style. Who knows, it might just bump the release of ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You’ (which is very good, actually).

Dance

Dance acts such as Nicky Romero and Mat Zo & Porter Robinson are making a notable presence in the chart, while Duke Dumont is still riding on the success of securing the top spot some weeks ago with ‘Need U (100%)’. Their influence can be seen ricocheting throughout the rest of pop,  the era of dance is now.

Best Track: Little Mix ‘How Ya Doin?’ feat. Missy Elliot – Girl power.

Worst Track: Loveable Rogues ‘What A Night’ – What a travesty.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky

Off The Hook takes the best ‘hooks’ from pop songs, so you can listen again and again and again and again…

Syncopated and sexy, so good they repeated it nine times…

Beyonce – Standing on the Sun

26 Apr

Beyonce Knowles has previewed a sizeable snippet of a new song in a H&M advertisement, following the appearance of “Grown Woman” in the singer’s recent Pepsi campaign.

The production (handled by Greg Kurstin and Chauncey ‘Hit-Boy’ Hollis) shimmers with light synths, harp flourishes and steady claps beneath Beyonce’s sensual vocals and heavy breathing, as the beat drives towards a beaming chorus where the bass kicks in at full pelt. The track was co-written by Sia Furler, whose writing credits also include ‘Radioactive’ by Rita Ora and ‘Kill, Fuck, Marry’ by Nikki Williams.

It is expected that “Standing on the Sun” (though not officially confirmed) will be included on Beyoncé’s long-awaited fifth studio album, the still untitled follow-up to 2011’s 4, which is due out later this year. The highly-anticipated project by Knowles will also feature “Grown Woman” and the recently self-released “Bow Down/I Been On,” as well as further collaborations with Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Frank Ocean.
